Creating a Wireless Network

Setting up a wireless network is a relatively quick and easy way to allow several computers to share a single high speed Internet connection.  The immediate advantages are these:

  • Computer users do not need to switch out a single cable connection from the Cable Modem or DSL Modem.

  • Computer users do not need to be in the same room as the Cable or DSL modem.

  • Computers can be located anywhere with in the range of the WAP, such as a bedroom or other room, another office, outside on the deck, etc.

  • Computers can share data and files, and stream music and videos from room to room in the network coverage area.

  • Can provide network connections for media center computers, and media extension devices such as personal video recorders, and allow such activities as network gaming, web surfing on the TV, etc.

While it is technically feasible to share a dial-up connection this way, using Windows Internet Connection Sharing, generally there are few advantages to sharing a low speed dial-up connection.  You would still have the other advantages named above, and network speeds between computers would be reasonably fast (11-108 Mbs) but the Internet connection would be as slow as before, with the added load of several users attempting to use the slow connection simultaneously.
